Events

Finding your way around in a new country can be quite difficult at times. Our events and  information sessions aim to help you to integrate and gain a better understanding of some important aspects of everyday life in Germany.

Germany has a reputation for having one of the best social security systems in the world. At its core, the social security system is based on five pillars: health insurance, long-term care insurance, pension insurance, unemployment insurance and accident insurance.

But how does the system actually work? Which insurances are available for international researchers? What differences apply to researchers with a work contract and those with a scholarship? What are the benefits of statutory health insurance? What do you need to consider when seeing a doctor? Which additional private insurances are beneficial for international researchers? All these questions will be addressed in this information session. Furthermore, the event will provide time to address participants' individual questions.

Who will pay my pension someday...?

As a scientist working at a university or research facility in Europe, you are part of a highly skilled and mobile workforce. Especially due to your mobility questions, uncertainties may arise when it comes to your social security and old-age provision. FindyourPension and VBL will inform you about the German and European Pension Scheme, the VBL occupational pension scheme, your pension rights and possibilities for refunds of contributions.

The event is organized by the Max-Planck-Institute for Eisenforschung Gelsenkirchen (MPIE). Researchers from the MPIE and from MUHS Gelsenkirchen are welcome to attend the information session on the German pension system and VBL.

Online seminar: 23.09.2025 from 11:00 a.m. - 01:00 p.m.;
Participation is free, but registration required: https://plan.events.mpg.de/event/558/

Researchers from non-EU countries must apply for a residence permit at the Immigration Office. The correct residence permit depends on your individual situation. Among other things, your monthly income and whether you have an employment contract with the university or receive a scholarship all determine which type of residence permit you require or are able to obtain. Some residence permits are more favourable than others in terms of qualification for a permanent settlement permit in Germany or mobility rights in other EU countries. This information event will give participants an overview of the different residence permits for researchers and help them find out which residence permits they are entitled to.
